Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any questions about your balance, vouchers and other payment queries, please contact the hotline.

How many phones can I expect to collect in a month?
It depends on how much effort you put in. However, there are 45 million subscribers and on average people change their mobile phone every 18 months, so there are plenty of phones out there.

I've changed my mind, originally we asked for vouchers, but now we want cash. How do I change from one to the other?
Just contact the Community Fonebak Helpline on 01708 683428 and let them know that you would like this changed, or email us at info@communityfonebak.com.

How do you decide which mobile phones are recycled and which are resold?
Many phones are broken beyond repair or are too old for resale (remember the big 'old bricks'?). These will be recycled. You should work on the assumption that about 50% of your phones will be resold and 50% recycled, but this may vary.

I have lost security tags for the container. How do I make sure the phones don't get stolen in transit?
Please contact Fonebak to order more security tags, without these the courier will not collect the container. Please note the address for delivery:

I need more posters, envelopes and containers. How do I get them?
You can order more by emailing info@communityfonebak.com or contact the Community Fonebak Helpline to order more on 01708 683428.

Do I get money/vouchers for chargers and accessories?
No. The scheme only pays for phones which can be resold.

What happens if I don't put the phones in bags and they just go in the containers?
The phones are pretty resilient, but there is always a chance of breakage if they are rattling around inside the container. By putting them in the bags, there is a much better chance that the phones will arrive intact. Remember you only receive funds for phones which can be resold.

How do you define a phone that can be resold?
A mobile phone that can be cost effectively refurbished for onward resale.

I sent off my container last week and someone has come in asking for their phone to be returned. What should I do?
Unfortunately, we are unable to return mobile phones once they have been sent to us.

Someone left their SIM card in their phone. Can this be returned?
In the same way that we cannot reutrn mobile phones, we also cannot return SIM cards. These are destroyed for security reasons when received.

What is Fonebak?
Fonebak is the leading company for the reuse and recycling of mobile phones and accessories. Fonebak ensures compliance with current and forthcoming environmental legislation. Fonebak is open to anyone (Network Service Providers, Retailers, Manufacturers, Charities, etc). It is endorsed by all the UK network service providers, major retailers and the Government. Why is the Link supporting this?
As a major retailer with more than 280 stores, The Link believes its responsibilities to the community and the environment are an important part of the business. The Community Fonebak scheme gives charities and other organisations the means to raise funds while providing a solution to minimise the potential impact of mobile phones and accessories on the environment.

What does it matter if a phone goes into landfill?
Mobile phones contain certain substances which, if deposited in landfill, would degrade over time and may cause serious damage to plants and wildlife. Fonebak provides a safe and responsible solution.

What substances are in a mobile phone?
There are a number of heavy metals in phones that we must prevent going into landfill. Copper, silver, gold and palladium are among the main metals recovered. Plastic can be recycled or used for the creation of energy. Fonebak ensures these are effectively recycled, ensuring they are returned to productive use.
